Q. I have to make a stopover in Taiwan, and I am trying to decide whether to stay at a hotel near the airport for convinience, or a cheaper place in the city. Also, if it is easy to get to the city, are there any cheap ($20 and less range) places that you can recommend?

The cheapest and easiest way is to just get the bus which costs around 100NT - 120NT. (3-4$)
The buses usually run every 30 - 45 mins.
It takes about 45 - 70 mins to get to the city center (well Taipei Main Station) depending on traffic.
The train is a little more expensive and in my opinion - less convenient.
Have a safe trip and a wonderful stay in Taipei!

A. I've done it once a long time ago.
There are plenty of hotels around Taipei Station and Ximenting where you could get a room but you generally pay full rate for the room as a walk in client.
You have to be careful not to arrive during a major holiday period as there is a lot of domestic travel now a days and the Budget hotels get filled up.
The Hotel reservation desk here is not that hot.

Q. This will be my first trip to Taiwan. I am a college student in the United States, and am fluent in Mandarin Chinese so language is not a problem. I plan to visit for a week sometime after Christmas and over the New Year, and hope to catch the festive season celebrations.
