I live in the Northern Houston area, so where could I go that isn't TOO far, and can supply me with any of those sort of things, or anything relating to such?

Does anyone know of any nice places to visit along the Texas gulf coast?
Q. I'm looking for a nice place for a weekend trip along the Gulf Coast of TX. I would definitely like it to be somewhere close to the beach, if possible. I'm thinking some place that's relatively close to Houston would be good. I'll be driving in from Dallas, and I don't want to have to drive more than 5 hours or so. (I'm a new TX resident, so I don't know the "good places" to visit.) Thanks in Advance!

A. Yes, Galveston would be a great place to go.

Just stay on I 45 through the Houston area. It will deadend in Galveston. From downtown Houston, Galveston is only about an hour away. From the Houston city limits, it is about 15- 20 minutes away.

Don't expect white sand and blue water, that is way down the coast, about three hours away. But it is a beach nonetheless.

In Galveston, there are lots of things to do. Antique and curio shops on the "Strand", a historic district. There is a real offshore oil platform open for tours, you can see shrimp boats and cruise ships, you can have a shrimp poboy or lavish seafood dinners. You can hit the beach on the Seawall or visit Moody Gardens for an indoor beach.

You can ride the Bolivar ferry across the bay for free, either driving your car on or parking it and walking onto the ferry. On the Bolivar side of the ferry, you can see the Bolivar lighthouse.

If you like historic homes, visit Ashton Villa or the Pope's palace, historic mansions.

Depending on the weather, you can go deep seafishing or take a harbor dolphin watching tour. (you can usually see dolphins from the ferryboat for free).

There are many hotels and motels in Galveston with all ranges of prices. Or you could rent a beach house for the weekend.

On the seawall, you can rent bicycles or 4 person "jitneys". You can walk out on a fishing pier at 81st street for free or on several rock groins.

In Galveston, watching the sunrise is better than the sunset.

The lightlife has alot of offerings and live music
.
Whatever you want to do, you can probably find it in Galveston.

Use a search engine and you can find out a lot.

Have fun!!
