How to get from 34th to 86th st New York?

Q. Hi I'm travelling to New York this month and staying in hotel Pennsylvania 34th looking to shop at carters and seen that nearest carters shop is at 86th Brooklyn can anyone tell me how to get there via public transport please and thank you

A. Oy, vey!

Be careful when you say what address you want.

When I saw 34th Street to 86th Street, I assumed you meant Manhattan, and my big question was going to be East 34th Street or West 34th Street and East 86th Street or West 86th Street.

But then I read the details! Clearly you meant West 34th Street, because that's where the Hotel Pennsylvania is. But then I saw what you meant when you said 86th Street!!! You don't mean 86th Street in Manhattan, but in Brooklyn.

You must know that Brooklyn and Manhattan were once separate cities and both have numbered street grids (actually, Brooklyn has several different ones!) So there's an 86th Street in Manhattan as well as one in Brooklyn. And boy, are they far from each other!!!!

To go from the Hotel Pennsylvania to the shopping area on 86th Street in Brooklyn, walk to the 34th Street subway station on 6th Avenue. (Be careful, there is a DIFFERENT 34th Street subway station on 7th Avenue, where the hotel is. That's a different station! However, you can enter the 34th Street/6th Avenue Station at 6th Avenue and 33rd Street as well as at 34th Street, and the 33rd Street/6th Avenue entrance is closer to your hotel.

Once in the station, look for the R and N trains DOWNTOWN. The fastest thing to do would be to take the N train DOWNTOWN to 59th Street in BROOKLYN (be careful to get on in the correct direction. You DON'T want 59th Street in Manhattan!) Then change for the R train DOWNTOWN. Get off at 86th Street. However, you could also just take the R train to start with and take it all the way to 86th Street.

Either way will work, but the R meanders around and stops everywhere. It would be much faster to take the N and change trains. This is a pretty long trip no matter what, so bring a good book!

What is the cheapest hotel in Manhattan?
Q. I need a hotel room for about 10 days starting Sept. 8th or 9th. The only lthing I require is that the hotel is on the island of Manhattan, below 72nd st, reasonably clean and reasonable safe. Other than that, I'm looking for the lowest rates possible. Any suggestions anyone?

A. I stay at Hotel Pennsylvania...it's only 139.00 per night during week days...on 34th & 8th across from Penn Stattion/MSG...it also provide a good landmark in case you get lost too !

book it thru Hotels.com (best price I have seen thus far)

What is a good hotel in Pennsylvania Amish Country?
Q. We want to take a weekend trip to Amish PA and are hoping to find a decent hotel near attractions. Thanks

A. There are many hotels amd motels in Lancaster County, but some of them are kind of shabby. Since I live here, I don't have a need to stay in these places, but I hear about them. Here's a link to the visitor's bureau site. It has all the hotels and motels listed:
