How bad is it to drive in Cleveland traffic?

Q. My husband and I are planning a weekend trip to Cleveland and I am NOT a city girl. I am wondering how bad Cleveland is to drive through? Should I expect a panic attack??

A. Even if you're heading INTO downtown Cleveland during the Friday night rush hour, traffic should not be an issue, barring really bad weather or an accident.

Traffic in Cleveland on weekends is not an issue, except in sports venue locations before and after games.

In bad weather, traffic can slow even on weekends, but this shouldn't be a problem except in really bad blizzards.

However, parking can be tricky and sometimes expensive for novices (check parking charges and ingress and egress privileges at all downtown hotels), although on the weekend, parking is easier to find and often cheaper than during the weekdays.

Consider staying somewhere close to Euclid Avenue (Holiday Express, Hyatt, and several others) or Tower City so that you can buy RTA day passes for $4.50 each and take advantage of the rapid rail lines, Healthline bus rapid, and bus connectors. Cleveland's mass transit options are very viable, even on weekends, and might be fun for a 'burb or country girl.

Alternatively, stay in a suburban hotel, and drive downtown (e.g., park at Tower City), and then utilize mass transportation for the remainder of the day. A good option is to drive to one of the RTA rail park 'n ride stations (e.g., West 150th, but probably not Windermere or Superior in East Cleveland for safety reasons IMO), park for free, and take the rapid to Tower City, University Circle, etc.

If you want to go to an area further away from the rapid system (e.g., Tremont), it might be easier to drive.

For individuals in decent shape, downtown is a very walkable except in really bad weather.

BOL for an enjoyable weekend in Cleveland!!!

Where is the bar scene best in downtown Cleveland?
Q. I am planning a trip to see an Indians game, and see the R&R HOF with some buddies. I know they are both within a mile or so of each other, but which one should I stay closest to hotel-wise? We won't have a car, so is there one in particular that is near some cool restaurants/bars? Thanks for any input!

A. There are essentially three different nodes of nightlife activity in downtown Cleveland. Any downtown hotel should be fine to walk to nightlife spots, Rock Hall and Jake. Also remember that Cleveland does have a decent public transit system. A rapid transit system connects downtown Cleveland to the airport and some interesting neighborhoods like Ohio City, and Shaker Square. There is a downtown Trolley that is free and the E-Line connects all the major entertainment spots.

The Warehouse District - located just west of Public Square along W.6th, St. Clair, and W.9th. This is definately the most swanky part of town. There are upscale restaurants, dance clubs, and occasionally some more casual bars. You have the most to choose from in this District. My personal favorite restaurant and bar in the district is tucked away on Frankfort off W.6th - called Johnny's Little Bar. Its classic Cleveland.

Lower Euclid - located just east of Public Square along Euclid and E.4th Street. Here you'll find an array of entertainment venues, like the House of Blues, a comedy club, trendy bowling alley, jazz club and an Irish pub. You'll also find Lola's by Iron Chef and Cleveland native Michael Symon.

Gateway - Very near the Jake at the Intersection of Prospect, E.9th, and Huron, you'll find some hoppin sports bars (especially before and after the Indians game). Winking Lizard has a great selection of beers, and Panini's sandwiches are legendary - both are Cleveland institutions.

As far as hotels go, I'd recommend the Hyatt. It is in the heart of Lower Euclid with entrances on Euclide Ave. and Superior Ave. Its probably the best hotel for the money in Cleveland and its a great location in the center of everything. The Radisson and Holiday Inn Express are more reasonable and in fine locations just as well, but they're obviously pretty average. Any downtown hotel would be good, exepct you may want to avoid the Holiday Inn Lakeside, Wyndam, Hampton Inn and Crowne Plaza. Ritz Carlton, Renaissance, and Marriot are all probably the nicest hotels in Cleveland and located on Public Square - also a great location for what you want to do.

What are some good hotels around the Sandusky, Ohio (Cedar Point) Area?
Q. A friend and I are planning a road trip in late June/early July to go to Cedar Point and we want to know if there are any good and cheap (as in price) hotels around the area. We don't want to stay in a dump, but we're both college students, so we can't afford a five-star hotel. Also, if there are any hotels you can find us that have special deals that would be great!

Thanks in advance.

A. Ok I live in a suburb in Cleveland around 50 miles from Cedar Point and i was in the same shoes you were!

So here is a list of some hotels in the link i have for you that are great for cheap but not dumpy hotels.

As in cheap i mean around anywhere from 70-100 a night! Since Sandusky is a tourist trap, dont expect to find a moderate hotel for 50-80 a night. Even though you mentioned above that you do not want expensive hotels, take a look at the Great Wolf Lodge, Castaway Bay, and Kalahari hotels..these places will make your jaw drop!
