A. Lowry Hotel ?

approximately how much will i need for 1 week in Manchester, England?
Q. I already have a hotel booked i am not here for shoping. just basic needs for 1 week

A. Free places to visit include Urbis, the Lowry, City Art Gallery, cathedtral, town hall, Museum of Science & Industry, Cornerhouse gallery, Whitworth gallery, Manchester Museum, city library, CUBE gallery, Heaton Park...oh, and the local newspaper is free to pick up in the city centre each weekday.

Good neighbourhoods to mooch around and people watch are the Village, Chinatown, Northern Quarter and Castlefield.

For cheap eats there are plenty of Greggs and Subways, but I recommend you go into Arndale Market, there are a lot of eateries there by the fish stall and butchers. There is a great bakery, a sushi place, a Thai place, an Indian, an Italian deli and even a Brazilian counter that all do fresh food. Some sandwich places too. You could get by on £10-15 a day, easy. For a cheap sitdown meal of an evening, try Wagamama, Chinatown or Rusholme.

Price of a pint these days has been creeping up, usually about £2 (real ale from the pump usually cheaper than bottled lager). Head for pubs with old-fashioned names like Ape & Apple, City Arms, Circus, Hare & Hounds, etc and not the overpriced posh places like Living Room or Tiger Tiger.

You may need bus or tram fares, especially if heading out to the Quays or down to the university and Rusholme's curry mile. A tram out to the Quays and back costs £2. If you take a Magic Bus (the old blue ones) down Oxford Road I think a single fare is 60p.

Happy travels!
