What hotels in San Diego accept Debit or cash?

Q. I have had my identity stolen before and now I refuse to use credit cards. No one will burn me again! I am planning to take a trip down to San Diego and am wondering if any of you knew of debit or cash friendly hotels. Also if there is a deposit what is the amounts you paid? Thanks.

A. Most hotels will have a cancellation policy of either 4pm or 6pm day of arrival (local time). Some will be the day before, but they can hold your room up until that time and as long as cancel within the desired period you will not be up for a charge and they will not require a deposit. Your debit card should be more than OK for holding the room and you should not need to give them a deposit.

Beware...when a debit card is used the hotel/car hire companies more often than not hold a reserve against your account of about $500 (in addition to the room charge rate). The money should show back in your account within 24-48 hours after departure but could take longer. The same can apply to cc's too, but usually just with debit cards as the vendor has more to lose.

I am sorry to hear about your bad experience but cc's are a far better bet than debit cards. The level that they offer of protection is far greater and your responsibility is typically only $50 with a cc. Maybe you should re-look at that idea, getting one card with good protection?
Good luck with your trip and the bookings.

Are there any hotels in the Downtown San Diego area still available for Comic Con?
Q. My friends and I are trying to stay at a hotel in the Downtown San Diego area on the night of July 14 and leave the 15th, but all the hotels in the area seem booked full. Does anyone know of any hotels relatively close to the Convention Center that still have rooms available for those dates? Thanks!

A. there were some on the shuttle routes that still had rooms about a week ago, but I have no idea now

you're really leaving it pretty late to have a hope of finding anything

What reasonably priced hotel to stay in San Diego?
Q. I'm looking for a reasonably priced (around $150 or less per night) hotel/motel to stay at in San Diego that is near the beach. I don't know the areas of San Diego and don't want a hotel in a bad neighborhood.

A. This is my favorite:
Neighborhood: Pacific Beach
707 Pacific Beach Dr
(between Ocean Blvd & Ocean Front Walk)
San Diego, CA 92109

(858) 488-4700

There's also the Surfer Hotel about 100 FT. away:

Neighborhood: Pacific Beach
711 Pacific Beach Dr
(between Ocean Blvd & Ocean Front Walk)
San Diego, CA 92109

(858) 483-7070
www.surferbeachhotel.com

You'll have to call for a price. You didn't say when you were coming. The rates jump up in summer. Either place, if you request it, has plenty of ocean views.
