Is a $50 to $75 sanitation fee reasonable for having a dog in your hotel room for one night?

Q. Many of the previously dog friendly hotels that we have stayed at in the past are now charging a $50 to $75 (per visit) sanitation fee for having a dog in the room. We are traveling and only staying 1 night at any hotel, so the sanitation fee is more than the room rate!!

A. Its reasonable if you are willing to pay it.

Sounds like they have had problems with peoples dogs peeing and pooping in the room (or worse), and have had to clean the carpets, or even replace stuff. That can get expensive very quickly.

Maybe they want to discourage the doggie crowd from visiting.

Does anyone know of dog friendly hotels between Montreal and Vancouver?
Q. I may be driving to Vancouver from Montreal before the end of September. I will be traveling with my dog and need to find dog-friendly accommodations along the way. Does anyone know of any? Also, I have never done this drive before - does anyone know approximately how far I can get for each day of driving? Thanks!

A. Super 8 motels and hotels are dog friendly. We have used them travelling with our Great Danes. There was a $10 surcharge for each dog, but we were given a housekeeping suite on the ground floor, right next to a fenced grassy area, at no extra charge.

Be sure to ask, if you are booking reservations, not all hotels in some chains will take dogs, even if they say so in their advertising. And we found that some of the so-called dog friendly ones wouldn't take large dogs like ours, even though we had brought crates for them.

Dog friendly hotels in the mission?
Q. I will be staying in SF for a few weeks. I'm looking for a dog friendly hotel, preferably in the mission district. Thanks!

A. Here's a list of pet-friendly hotels. I see none in the Mission.
