Cost to attend the University of Cambridge?

Q. The University of Cambridge is one of my top choices of universities of which I would love to attend. I live in San Jose, CA, U.S.A, but have wanted to attend the University of Cambridge for as long as I can remember. What is the price for a round trip flight to Cambridge in USD if it's only for a week, perhaps just for the interviews? How much would it be just to fly there and stay?

A. On Farecompare (see below), there are some cheap flights for $700. Typically it can cost about $900.

You can find hostels in London, which are less than hotels. Plan for $100/day to include accommodations and food.

Is it practical to rent a place in new haven for work and another one in boston for the weekends?
Q. I live in boston and may have to move to new haven for work for a few years. Is it practical to rent a place in new haven and another one in boston/somerville/cambridge just for the weekend? I am usually done with work by 3pm on friday.

A. You may find once you move to New Haven that NYC is just as appealing as Boston, and pretty close. Plus New Haven and the CT shoreline communities have their own weekend charms.

On the other hand, you may be able to find someone in Boston that only lives there during the week (like half the people in my building do) who go back home on the weekends to split the place with. I have a friend in NYC that does this -- she has a "roommate" she never actually sees.

Or do the math on 8 nights in a hotel per month vs. a full month's rent.

July 4th in Boston-Any hotels to see the fireworks guaranteed?
Q. I want to see the fireworks from a hotel in Boston but I can't find anyone to guarantee views. Do you know of anywhere? Is anyone a member of Community Boating in Boston?
Does anyone have any rooftops or restaurants that you can see the fireworks from?
Can you see the fireworks from the Collonade rooftop?

Thanks!

A. The only good choices IMHO are the Sonesta, the Hyatt Cambridge or the Doubletree Suites Hotel on the Boston site of the Charles, as long as you get rooms facing the water and downtown. BUT the downside with anything but the Sonesta is that even though you will see them, you will be rather far back. For many years I would go up on the roof of the high rise I lived in (a few blocks farther back than the Hyatt, closer than the Doubletree). While you could see them well, it really wasn't that great as you don't get the booms or feel a part of it. I did it on years when I was too lazy or the weather wasn't great.

If you go on the Charles side, down by Kendall Square, there are some awesome viewing spots that while crowded aren't insane. And the speakers are there so you can hear the Pop's...and the view is a million times better. I would highly recommend that.

There are various restaurants that have views, but most are either closed for private parties or more of a zoo than Memorial Drive.

Now, for the Harborworks fireworks (I haven't checked the dates this year but usually a few days before), I would highly recommend one of the fireworks cruises. The views are GREAT and long as the weather is nice it's a killer trip! Just be careful if you read about them, as some will offer July 4th cruises, but go out on the Harbor, where you can hardly see any of the Charles fireworks. BTW, with all the security crackdowns, boats have become a HUGE hassle on the 4th given the limited room on the Charles, so I'd skip that too.

And based on the hotel you mentioned for the 4th please remember that the July 4th fireworks are on the Charles river, and the Harborfest ones are on, well, the Harbor lolol. So plan an spots you go to with that in mind, as the Boston waterfront has a minimal view, at best, of the Charles. Also keep in mind that any short building or low floor will have no view of the fireworks due to trees and other buildings blocking it.

Hope you find an awesome spot! (tell you, Memorial Drive anywhere between Kendall Sq and Mass Ave Bridge is great, esp where the road goes up for an overpass....it is closed to traffic all day).
